Press release from The Brantwood Severn Studio
Coniston, Cumbria – Brantwood’s Severn Studio is the venue for Eileen Postlethwaite's first solo exhibition Her work is inspired by natural objects found in the countryside and shoreline in and around her home in south Cumbria. From collections of seeds, leaves, fruit and berries, feathers, shells, insects and other interesting natural forms the resulting work is meticulously drawn with intricate detail.
To capture the characteristic qualities of the subject, her chosen media consists of graphite pencils, drawing inks, pencil crayons and watercolour paints. Eileen's work is the result of incredibly detailed observations of everyday objects drawn with sensitivity, capturing the simple honest beauty of nature.
Eileen will also be including as part of her exhibition, drawings she has done of some of John Ruskin’s extensive shell collection. John Ruskin, who lived at Brantwood from 1872 until 1900, was deeply touched by the beauty of nature. Throughout his life he collected and studied shells, plants and rocks. As a result he amassed a large collection of shells and geological specimens, many of which are on display at Brantwood
Alongside her paintings and drawings Eileen will display a collection of her own collection of natural objects and actual specimens found and used in the drawings. Her wonderfully detailed work will inspire and encourage us all to take a closer look at nature.
